With Halloween right around the corner, you may be starting to get the decorations put up and the lights hung. While making an elaborate display will make you the talk of the town, there are some safety considerations to remember in order to prevent fires and electrical hazards this holiday season. Therefore, in addition to securing your home with an Ann Arbor High-Value Homeowners Insurance policy, heed the following advice.

Ensure the lights are outdoor friendly.

According to SafeBee, Look for the UL mark. This means representative samples have been tested and met the rigorous safety standards of UL. If the UL mark is in red, it means the product has been tested for outdoor use, including exposure to rain and UV light from the sun. If the UL label is green, the lights are suitable for indoor use only.

Don’t overload circuits.

With LED lights, this is less of an issue. However, be sure to use outdoor extension cables that can stand up to harsh weather and the elements when decorating outdoors. Remember not to exceed the capacity of the cord!

Swap out candles for safer options.

Replace candles with glow sticks, flashlights, or battery-operated lights. Not only will this be a much safer option, you won’t even be able to tell once it’s inside a pumpkin or a paper bag.

Be mindful of the placement of decorations.

If you do choose to use candles, be sure no other low-hanging decorations are present that can catch fire. Keep open flames away from heat sources and out of walkways and driveways where they can be kicked over by accident.
